Professor Ama Johal

Ama Johal is a Professor/Consultant Orthodontist, Academic Lead for Orthodontics at Bart's and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary College, University London [QMUL]. He qualified in dentistry at Sheffield University in 1989, with Honours and completed the Membership in Orthodontics (Royal College Surgeons England) and Masters Degree in Orthodontics at QMUL, graduating with distinction in 1996. 

He has completed a PhD in the use of mandibular advancement splints in sleep-related breathing disorders. Ama is past Vice-President of the British Society Dental Sleep Medicine, a full member of the Angle Society of Europe and appointed a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy. 

Both his clinical and research work has been rewarded with numerous National and International prizes and grants, including the Turpin Award [2021] from the AAO for Evidence-based Research and the Chapman Award [2022] for best published research from BOS and 2024 B.F. and Helen E. Dewel  Award for best Clinical Research publication AJODFO. He is an invited lecturer, both nationally and internationally, with over 100 publications in peer-reviewed International journals and several book chapters.  His research interests include the impact of quality of life in orthodontics and the management of patients with sleep-related breathing disorders. His specialist interests include multidisciplinary care of patients with orthodontic-restorative needs. 

He is a regular invited keynote speaker, both nationally and internationally, at numerous conferences around the world.

Both his role as a Consultant Orthodontist and his additional training in children’s dentistry have equipped him with the skills to provide the very highest standards of patient care, in a very reassuring manner. His specialist clinical interests include providing care for patients with missing teeth [hypodontia] and the management of adult patients.

Ama has been actively involved in the training of Dentists and Orthodontists now for over thirty years. In addition, he runs a number of highly regarded post-graduate training courses on Adult Orthodontics, The multidisciplinary management of hypodontia, The Straight Wire and Functional Appliance courses and Space Planning in Orthodontics.

He is one of only a handful of UK Orthodontists to be invited and meet the high standards for entry to join the Angle Society of Europe, a very selective group of Orthodontists dedicated to providing the highest standards of clinical care and excellence. 

Ama is the Clinical Lead in Orthodontics at 32Co where he works to raise the standard of orthodontic care across the UK. Leading a team of Orthodontists at 32Co Ama helps 1,000s of dentists have greater confidence in their clear aligner cases by being able to work directly with an Orthodontist through-out their cases.
